Primitive
condition of facilities
The field station is
located on a five-acre
site near Bull Shoals Lake
and has a beautiful old stone house plus several smaller
outbuildings. The field station has no external power source, no
phone, no flush toilet, and no running water. Limited electrical
power is available through a
15 kW generator
and 12V storage batteries.
A cell phone is available for for field station users and may be
checked out from the BSFS Office
in the Kings Street Annex, Room 214 at Missouri State in Springfield. We
currently rent a “porta
potty”. The house has
limited room for sleeping.
Overnight users,
particularly classes,
should plan to camp with
tents and cook on a
portable stove (e.g.,
Coleman). All users should
bring in their own
drinking water.
Dr. Janice Greene,
director of BSFS,
and Dr. Emmett Redd submitted a grant to the National Science Foundation to
begin renovations to the
existing Frank Drury House on the five-acre station
site. The grant award in excess
of $60,000 provides funding to drill a well, install a
septic system and plumbing, and update the electrical system of
the house. This will make the Drury house more livable and
increase space even more for graduate students and classes.
Work on this project begins in Spring 2004.
In addition to the improvements to the Frank
Drury House, an outdoor classroom shelter is scheduled for
construction behind the aforementioned structure. The
shelter will provide shade and cover for classes during both fair
and inclement weather with seating at six to eight picnic tables.
New Addition to BSFS Infrastructure

In
August 2003, the Missouri State Board of Governors voted to purchase a house
immediately outside the gate to the Drury Wildlife Conservation
Area. With the purchase of this house, we have modern
facilities for graduate students and classes to stay overnight.
We are in the process of painting and adding furniture and kitchen
items. This is an exciting addition to our facilities and
will continue to increase the use of the station.
