A new Director for BSFS
by Mike Dickerson
The Bull Shoals Field Station would like to welcome aboard its new DirectoJanice Greener, Dr. Janice Greene. Dr. Greene has a diverse background, strong in both field research and environmental education. As Associate Professor of Biology at Missouri State University, Dr. Greene has forged lasting relationships with local, state, and federal organizations, and currently sits on the Missouri Clean Water Commission.

Dr. Greene desires to help people appreciate and understand their local environment. This motivation is shown by her involvement in many leading environmental education workshops, such as the Leopold Education Project (she is the Missouri Director), Project Learning Tree, Project WILD, Project WET, and Zero Population Growth.

John Havel
When asked about her goals for the Field Station, Dr. Greene says she would first like to continue the good work done by the station's first director, Dr. John Havel. Since 1999, Dr. Havel has built a strong research program at the station, has overseen the development of many scientific databases and informational websites, and has made the Field Station prominent in regional water-quality issues.

A few of Dr. Greene's specific plans
include modernizing the existing facilities so that they are more usable to researchers, continuing the long-term water-quality monitoring of Bull Shoals Lake, and adding additional ecosystem monitoring capabilities. Additionally, she plans to strengthen the Field Station's education mission by using the facilities to promote education about the Ozarks region. Dr. Greene held several K-12 teacher-training classes this summer that demonstrated that the station is an ideal setting to learn about the environment.
