The open house
was a real success. We had beautiful
weather, barely dodging a
big rainstorm the
previous day. The Springfield News
Leader (May 12, 2001) had a nice
article about the field station,
which helped get the word out.
The open house had good
attendance (53 guests plus 19
staff). Guests included Don and
Jerry Baker, who formerly lived in
the Frank Drury house while their
father worked for the Conservation
department. They pointed out that
this was the period when the Drury
Conservation Area produced many of
the deer transplanted to the rest of
the state.
We had a number of interesting
activities, led by faculty and
graduate students. These activities
included a nature walk, visits to
view pond life, trips on the lake to
view water quality methods, tours of
the house, and various faculty
exhibits. For example, guests could
see how to age trees and how to
identify bats using sonar.
We are grateful to the
Missouri State staff
members for contributing their time
and to the visitors for their
interest. We plan to have an open
house at about the same time next
year, so put it on your calendars.
